1. When did the oil rig 1st explode and how much oil leaked out initially?
April 20; the amount of oil that "leaked out initially" is unknown. Initially it was believed that there was no oil leak.
2. What is the lowest and highest average of oil that has leaked from the rig?
There is no high / low average, only high and low estimates. The range is 35,000 to 60,000 barrels (bbls) per day. There are 42 gallons in a bbl. The lowest initial estimate was 1,000 bbls per day, made on April 24. The worst case scenario was estimated as 100,000 bbls per day.
3. What were all the possibilities that you know of that they (gov., BP, clean up recruits) thought of to fix the problem of the oil spill?
There have been thousands of fixes suggested for the problem. The "top hat," the "junk shot," the cap, the relief well, and the static shot are the ones that have been attempted. The cap is currently keeping the oil from spilling.
4. When was the cap put on and how much oil is leaking now?
The cap was put on July 15, and there are no leaks as of this time.
5. Did Bonnie harm, help, or do both to our coast and if so what?
Bonnie caused little harm, in that crews involved in the cleanup had to suspend their efforts until the storm passed.
6. What places have seen tar balls in the area?
Tar balls have washed up on the shores of Louisiana, Florida, Mississippi, Texas, and Alabama
7. How long will estimated clean up be?
The amount of time it will take to clean up the oil could be anywhere from months to years. There is no way of knowing or even accounting for all the oil that is in the Gulf.
8. Who’s responsible for the oil spill?
Currently, BP is taking responsibility, but the owner of the rig, Transocean, may very likely be found to have played a large part in the oil spill as well.
